HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS ALEXANDRIA, TN

Alexandria, Tennessee, was founded in 1806 by Daniel Alexander in what was then Smith County (later DeKalb County in 1837), with settlers arriving as early as 1795. It served as a prominent pre-Civil War trading town, a base for Confederate cavalry raids, and home to the long-running DeKalb County Fair, established in 1856. 

Early Foundation and Development

  • Founder: Daniel Alexander purchased 200 acres from Charles Kavenaugh on August 5, 1806, for , laying out the initial 24 lots.

  • County Shifts: Due to shifting county lines, early records for Alexandria may be found in Smith, Wilson, Cannon, or DeKalb counties.

  • Key Growth: By 1854, the town had grown to 380 residents. A devastating fire in 1906 led to the town center being redesigned.

  • Economy: It was considered the wealthiest and most prominent town in DeKalb County before the Civil War. 

     

Civil War Era

  • Strategic Location: Alexandria served as a base for Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan's cavalry raids into Kentucky in 1862 and 1863.

  • Military Activity: The area was known for its well-watered camp areas, which allowed for the assembly of thousands of troops.

  • Post-War: The town was re-incorporated in 1913, with Rev. O.P. Barry serving as the first mayor of the new era. 

     

Cultural and Historical Landmarks

  • DeKalb County Fair: Established in 1856, it is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, in the state, continuing to operate to this day.

  • Alexandria Cemeteries Historic District: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this area includes the 1836 East View Cemetery and the 1869 Seay Chapel.

  • Education: The Wheeler School for Black students was established during the Reconstruction period, where W.E.B. DuBois is associated with teaching during his time at Fisk University.
